As Black Belts look for ways to expand their expertise, they often find different avenues available within their company.

Some will focus on training, while others will become internal consultants to the current set of Black Belts and Green Belts. This course was developed to give the inner consultant/coach more experience with additional in-depth topics spread out through all phases of the DMAIC methodology.

The Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt Course

This workshop is an intense but exciting treatment of some of the more advanced Six Sigma tools and concepts. It will give the MBB candidates an arsenal of knowledge and power to move their organizations toward more significant savings and profitability. This course will blend theory with some very easy-to-use software that will make the applications of the concepts straightforward.

These concepts and applications will be demonstrated via case studies, simulations, and exercises using the Statapult©. Topics include advanced DOE methodology, historical and transactional data applications, high throughput testing, multiple response optimizations, and Design for Six Sigma applications.

Prerequisites

Black Belt certification through AAA or another approved provider is required. A solid DOE background is recommended.  If the certifier is other than Air Academy Associates, a knowledge assessment is needed and a review of their Black Belt project is required.

Participants will be supplied software and installation instructions.

With many courses, two hours of coaching support is provided, and additional time is available for purchase if needed. A Master Black Belt is an experienced Black Belt who has completed several significant projects and has received additional training in advanced Six Sigma tools. Master Black Belts serve as technical mentors and resources for both Black Belts and Green Belts. They provide coaching and may also provide training.

Master Black Belt certification is definitely worth it. The training exposes you to new tools and techniques to solve more challenging problems. But beyond the training, certification demonstrates that you are a practitioner who can apply the appropriate tools and techniques to achieve tangible business results.

Of course, salaries vary by region and industry, but each year the American Society for Quality (ASQ) conducts an annual salary survey. In their 35th annual survey reported in Quality Progress Magazine (December 2021), the average Master Black Belt salary was $146,358 and the average Black Belt salary was $109,505.

The Six Sigma Master Black Belt training course itself is 5 days, but additional time is needed to complete a major Lean Six Sigma project. Master Black Belt projects typically take between 6 months and 12 months to complete. The project must use the DMAIC methodology, make use of several DMAIC technical tools, and result in auditable and validated net hard savings to the bottom line.

As a BB, you can solve more challenging problems thanks to your advanced problem-solving skills. Your organization benefits greatly from these capabilities and often offers profit sharing to this high-level position.

The average pay for a Six Sigma Master Black Belt in the US is $145K. Therefore, having an MBB increases your employability and qualifies you for higher pay.

Here are the requirements: when choosing a project within your organization:

  • All projects must align with the overall business plan and usually require approval by an internal champion or business leader. In most cases, these also need to have a strategy to save dollars or make dollars for the organization over and above the existing process plan. The specifics need to be reviewed prior to submission and embarkment.
  • The chosen technologies and statistical tools used in the project need to be explained and should be familiar to experts.
  • A positive mindset that can work well and communicate easily is advantageous because it generates positive financial outcomes for the business.
  • Some companies require full time employment or commitment, while other times these projects can be done on a part-time basis. This varies greatly per industry.
  • A strong desire to raise the bar on quality is also necessary.
  • For the project, experts with creative problem-solving skills and familiarity with customer needs and requirements are needed. In addition to leadership and other collaborative skills, the professional should have practical communication skills.
